Training in Kingston

Today we finally got the Kingston thermal that we’ve been waiting for. It fully kicked at high noon, and us and Gordo went out for a 3 hour showdown. We did starts, and short courses. What a day! Our goals for the big breeze day were: 1. To tack and get through the boat very fast and clean, and 2. To pay attention and be vocal about our compass bearing. The 2nd goal is not so important on such short courses, but in a big event the legs are huge, and we need to be used to paying attention, without paying attention! We decided to choose our tacking goal because the 200lb boat slows down very fast when tacking against big waves and wind, and we find that we move too slow, when the helm is hard over (which is necessary) in these conditions.
Tomorrow we plan on mounting the Hero Cam somewhere on the boat. Our focus for the day will likely be something close to, me looking around without moving my heavy head too much, and without getting the helm out of sync, Dan hoisting and filling the kite without it luffing once, and us prioritizing tasks. After a turn, it’s super important to get the boat going max speed FIRST, even when other things appear to be in shambles, and need attention. If it ain’t going to kill us, get it in 7 seconds when we’re ripping. We’re looking forward to it, and we’re working hard to drive ourselves back in the training groove in the wake of a great regatta. The show must go on, and we need to be a lot better, yesterday. Time is not on our side, but it’s not really on anyones side, except for Peter Pan, if he’s that guy that doesn’t age.
